Since 1999, the segment of generic drugs has generated savings of R $
132 billion in the Brazilian consumer's pocket, according to the Brazilian
Association of Generic Medicines Industries (PróGenéricos).
According to data from the consulting firm, 356.7 million generic drugs
were marketed in the country, compared to 326.4 million in the first three
months of 2018. Growth was four percentage points higher than that of the total
pharmaceutical market, which closed the period with a 5.28%. According to the
Brazilian Association of Distribution and Logistics of Pharmaceutical Products
(Abradilan), which represents the distribution segment, generics were the main
responsible for the growth of 8% in the sale of drugs to retail in the first
quarter. The category accounted for 43% of the business in the period.
In the industry focus
Generics have also been the driving force behind the growth of the
pharmaceutical industry in Brazil in recent years and already account for 33.7%
of the drug market in Brazil. Currently there are 120 laboratories that produce
this class of drugs.
Generic medicines were instituted through Law 9,787 / 1999 that
established this market in Brazil.
