South Korea’s Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Korea Health Industry Development Institute have opened the Korean Medicine Center in Gangneung Media Village to help keep reporters and journalists visiting from around the world in good health while they report on the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018.
Korean Medicine Center - Consulting & Treatment Program
The Korean Medicine Center also opened during the 2015 Gwangju Summer Universiade, where it provided medical services to 532 athletes from 100 countries, who accounted for 66.9 percent of all visitors to the Korean Medicine Center during that time. Korean Medicine treatments, including acupuncture, cupping (moxibustion) therapy, and chuna manipulation therapy, were popular among the athletes, as they are effective in relieving pain and preventing injury without causing side effects or doping problems. The Korean Medicine Center was also in operation during the 2016 Cheongju World Martial Arts Masterships, where it treated injuries and provided preventive medicine and treatments that helped the athletes stay in top physical condition. Thanks to the excellent work the center did at these events, officials from countries with Eastern medicine traditions of their own who are in charge of planning other competitions, such as the 2017 Taipei Summer Universiade and Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, showed great interest in the center and its services.
The first Korean Medicine Center for a sports competition opened in 2014, when South Korea hosted the Asian Games in Incheon, with the official approval of the Olympic Council of Asia. This was the first time that a medical center specializing in Korean medicine had ever been provided for athletes participating in a global competition. Korean Medicine services have since been provided during subsequent international sports competitions, causing word to spread worldwide about the excellence of Korean Medicine.
The Korean Medicine Center has been opened in Gangneung Media Village to help promote the health of the athletes and members of the press during the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Games by providing Korean Medicine consultations and various Korean Medicine and treatment services.
The center is located at the heart of the village, making it easily accessible from the nearby media main dining hall, airport check-in center, and NBC work center. A website has also been launched for the center so that people can make appointments and receive treatments at their convenience.
Doctors from 13 representative Korean Medicine hospitals and clinics in Korea, will provide Korean Medicine health care and treatment services at the Korean Medicine Center. And specialized Korean Medicine treatments will be provided on the weekends, especially for hair loss, skincare, and dieting.

Marc Kelly, a foreign correspondent working in Gangneung Media Village, visited the Korean Medicine Center for help with the pain in his neck and back that emerged after days of reporting on the preparations for the Winter Games. After consulting with a doctor, he received acupuncture and chuna manipulation therapy. He later expressed his amazement at the excellence of the Korean Medicine treatments he received, saying, “I wasn’t simply given some painkillers and physical therapy; rather, the treatment involved a thorough and accurate diagnosis and remedies that were in alignment with my constitution. It was very impressive.
Korean Medicine Center - Chuna Manipulation Therapy
Korean Medicine has achieved remarkable advancements based on Dongui Bogam, a book on Eastern medicine written by Heo Jun. Built up around the concept of providing treatments for the purpose of preventing disease, Korean Medicine has grown into a modern-day, evidence-based field of preventive medicine that focuses on getting to the root of health issues and providing treatments that are suited to patients’ constitutions rather than simply treating patients after symptoms appear.
As an official branch of medicine in South Korea’s national healthcare system, Korean Medicine pursues scientification and evidence-based medicine through national R&D support, and Korean Medicine treatments are included in the National Health Service system. Korean Medicine doctors are professional doctors who are required to study for six years at a Korean Medicine school, pass the national medical examination, and acquire a license from the Ministry of Health and Welfare to practice medicine.
South Korea has played a major role in the WHO’s International Classification of Traditional Medicine (ICTM) program by participating in various projects, such as the standardization and classification of diseases, and exchange programs, including collaborative research with traditional medicine and integrative medicine experts from around the world, studies on Korean Medicine, and establishment of Korean Medicine hospitals overseas.
People from countries with an understanding of traditional Eastern medicine, such as Japan, China, Russia, Mongolia, and the UAE, often receive Korean Medicine treatments when visiting South Korea, with visitors from Japan, China, and Russia, in particular, taking advantage of their geographic proximity to this country to come and receive Korean Medicine treatments regularly.
As one of the most unique establishments at the Winter Games, the Korean Medicine Center is a place that each member of the foreign press delegations should visit at least once.
An official from the Ministry of Health and Welfare remarked, “Through the Korean Medicine Center, we are happy to provide medical services for members of the press and media, who will be spending long days reporting on the Winter Games.” He went on to add, “We will focus on ensuring the health of the press based on excellent Korean Medicine consultations and treatments as well as Korean medicinal herb tea to ward off the negative effects of the cold weather.”
The Korean Medicine Center at the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. over a period of 42 days, from January 15 to February 25, the day of the closing ceremony of the Winter Games.
